The most wonderful part of having a pet is that they expect so little of you.
They’re not bothered whether you do anything interesting with your freetime, or even whether you achieve anything while you’re at work.
They don’t expect you to be confident, or fun, or witty. They couldn’t care less whether you have an intelligent opinion on the news. They don’t need you to live up to anything.
They don’t find you any less attractive for slobbing around the house in a pair of jogging trousers and a vest. Even if you did spill tea down it.
They like you best when you’re at home, quietly, just sitting and ready for a little companionship.
Whoever it was who first domesticated a wild animal all those thousands of years ago, I am heartily glad of it.
