Brilliant book: Envisioning Information by Edward R Tufte.

The world is complex, dynamic, multi-dimensional; the paper is static, flat. How are we to represent the rich visual world of experience and measurement on mere flatland?… All sorts of techniques for doing better than flattened-out toad suits have evolved during [the history of] information design.

    i remember reading the flatland book when it first came out, must be 25 years ago!
